Star Trek Actor Raised COPD Awareness

Star Trek fans everywhere are mourning the passing of actor Leonard Nimoy, famous for his role as Mr.Spock on the long-running science fiction show. Yet Nimoy is known for something else – helping shed light on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the condition that lead to his death.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a condition that slowly destroys the lungs, the COPD Foundation stated. There are several types of COPD, including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, refractory asthma and bronchiectasis. Many factors can cause this illness, but the most common is smoking.
